Dear friends and
family,
I haven’t written to
you in a while. Last month I was feeling
pretty blue, so I didn’t get a letter out.
It wasn’t anything that everyone
of us doesn’t go through. I’m feeling
much better now, though. I hope before I
get too old I can learn to submit to God’s teaching, and not feel like giving
up during trials.
Things are strange
here right now. I don’t understand the
whole situation, but it seems that the government wants to regulate the
indigenous people more, and they are fighting back. They have demonstrated by making fires across
roads, so no one can get through. You
have to understand, there are only about 4 roads in and out of Tena, and they
block them all at the same time. I can
only conclude that it is their right as citizens to do this, because it has
happened before, and the police are always there, but don’t try to stop
it. Also, it seems they announce ahead
of time when they are going to do it.
Mark got back from a few weeks in the
jungle. He is thankful for the time he
got to spend there. He walked back out
with a Huaroni man. It was about a 10 hour walk through the
jungle and over the mountains. The man
is staying at our house for a few weeks.
I am enjoying it, and he is teaching Mark some of the language.
I am thankful that we
are starting to develop more friendships.
We met 2 Quechua boys, ages 15
and 17 who go to school in our town.
They taught us a few words in their language. They live in a small village behind
Shandia. They invited us to their house
on Saturday. It is an hour walk after
the road ends. I am really looking
forward to it. I hope we can show them
the love of Christ.
There is a small
group of Christians in our town. They
started a Bible study and prayer group on Friday nights. We went last week. The man was challenging everyone to get a
burden for the people of Napo, and to pray for them every day. God spoke to me, because I have gone to
villages to pass out tracts, but I never have in my own town.
Some people from the
U.S. were here visiting Elvis a few weeks ago.
I was able to spend a little time with them. It sure was nice to talk and hear English. They brought crayons and teaching material
which they gave me. I am very thankful
for them. The U.S. is the land of
plenty, but things like that are scarce here and very expensive. They gave me coloring books about Jesus with
the crayons. I want to go to Costa Azul
and have a simple Bible lesson for children and give them the books and crayons. Please pray with me for that village that God
will start a Christian work there.
We have much to be
thankful for. We should always be aware
of our blessings and give thanks to the One who has given us so much. Love, Joyce
